Ditch These Three

As a Life Coach, I want you to be chock-full of ideas and beliefs that move you in the direction of your dreams. And these ideas…um…DON’T.

1) “I should be able to stop/control my thoughts.” Back when I was a yoga teacher, people used to say to me, “I couldn’t stop thinking during meditation.” Yes, thoughts are unstoppable! This is how our human brains are evolved to function. You can’t STOP thoughts, and you can’t CONTROL the constant stream of images and words and ideas that boil off the top of your brain like steam from a teakettle. To prove my point, let’s try this little thought experiment: for the next 5 seconds, DO NOT THINK OF PINK ELEPHANTS. (How’d you do?)

The good news: you can ADD to your thoughts. You can EVOLVE them. You can CHOOSE which thoughts you want to lean into, and which thoughts you want to set aside. These are all mental skills, and you can get better at them!

2) “I need to get rid of this feeling.” Yes, unpleasant emotions are awful. AWFUL! (Sometimes unpleasant emotions escalate to the point that they are disorders, in which case, you need a therapist, not a coach.)  But even people who are not suffering from a disorder, know how terribly uncomfortable it is to feel anger, grief, anxiety, shame, disgust. Unfortunately, you can’t curate your emotional experiences in this ride called human life–rejecting your emotions (“experiential avoidance”) numbs out ALL emotions, not just the unpleasant ones. Emotions that you don’t allow yourself to feel tend to get stuck–they don’t move.

The good news: Emotions give us amazing information about boundaries, values, priorities, identity. Your emotional life is a beautiful, powerful instrument–I think of it as a magic wand, or a dowsing rod. The ability to feel your feelings is an enormously important skill. And like any other skill, you can get better at it!

3) “I need to have it all figured out before I take action.” Oh my beloved friend, please believe me when I say that YOU DON’T. “Needing to figure it all out” is a classic way that our brains keep us from taking meaningful action. You don’t need to have it all figured out, you only need to know the NEXT, REASONABLEISH step. “F$ck around and find out” is a PERFECTLY legitimate way to learn. In fact, it’s the MAIN way that we learn.

Okay?

So to summarize:

DON’T believe everything you think.
DO feel your feelings.
DO f$ck around and find out.

These are just SOME of the skills you’ll practice and master through coaching!

If you’re ready for:

🛤 A breakthrough in your pattern of not prioritizing yourself, so that you can move forward confidently in the direction of your dreams
🌅 Deep knowing that you, as you are, are already worthy, so you can stop trying to justify yourself and create a life that reflects your most deeply held values
🕊 A better relationship with your inner voice, so that you can stop the endless mental chatter telling you that you suck, and be at peace with yourself
🌈 Better boundaries, so that you can live a life that is meaningful on your terms, free of the expectations put on you by your culture, your parents, your boss, or society at large
🦄 Clarity about what YOU actually want, so that you’re living a life that is tailor-made to your preferences, not an empty unsatisfying version of somebody else’s life
💞 A stronger practice of self-care so that you can be present in the moment with the ones you love for years to come
