My friend, you recognize this scenario?
You hire a mindset coach. Hopefully, a great one who blows your mind with revelatory insights.
A few weeks go by, and you notice yourself thinking a whole new set of thoughts.
The mindset coaching is working!
But then more weeks—or even months—pass. And your life pretty much looks the same.
Slowly it dawns on you: your ADHD is undercutting the mindset coaching.
Even though your mindset coach regularly blows your mind with powerful reframes…
Even though she helps you develop brilliant strategies for what to do next…
…When the time comes to IMPLEMENT those strategies, or change your behavior to align with those reframes, you keep running into the same old problems.
Specifically, the problems of your ADHD self!
- Your big plans are constantly derailed by tedious administrative bullshit you can’t seem to get under control.
- Your energies are wildly unpredictable. Way too often you’re too drained to take meaningful action.
- You understand the big picture strategy, but struggle to extrapolate that to actual hour by hour tasks.
- You get caught in the weeds of relatively minor aspects of the project for way too long
- Big emotions blindside you and you have no reliable way of regulating them.
No shade to mindset coaches—mindset work has helped me immensely!
But here’s the thing: mindset is not the full story for ADHDers, and most mindset coaches don’t understand the specific challenges that come with ADHD brains.
You can have a million cool ideas thanks to the strategies you created with your coach. But your executive functioning issues make it challenging to connect the sidewalk of your mindset to the driveway of your actions.
A few other ADHD features that mindset coaches aren’t necessarily equipped to recognize or handle:
✨ Burnout: Chances are good your burnout threshold is lower than most of your coach’s neurotypical clients.
✨ Sensory overload: Your mindset coach might be tempted to downplay sensory issues because she has no experience of how debilitating they can be.
✨ Big emotions: research has shown that ADHD brains have bigger emotional fluctuations than neurotypical brains. But some coaches may treat them like a distraction—or worse, try to talk you out of them. This is extremely detrimental to people with ADHD!
It’s not that mindset coaching is pointless for ADHD women—it’s just incomplete. It’s simply not enough to change how you think. ADHD brain will LOL and not fall in line!
A far more effective approach, for ADHD women, is to build systems and strategies that work with your brain, not against it.
I’m an ADHD coach for smart, powerful women. And that’s exactly what I help my clients do.
