Never for the haters

One of my many brilliant coaches gave me a wonderful piece of advice.

She said something like this:
“Write for the people who already believe in you.
Write for the people who already love you.

Don’t write for the haters.
Don’t write for the people who need to be convinced.

Write for the people who already love you,
and who you already love.”

This is great advice in a number of arenas in human life.
// Don’t date or marry a person you feel like you’re having to convince them to be in love with you. //
// Don’t stay at a job if you feel like you’re having to convince them of your value. //
// Don’t keep hanging out with that friend who makes you feel like shit. //

To paraphrase the immortal Nina Simone,

“You have to learn to get up from the table
when love is no longer being served.”

So if you’re reading this,
and you love what I write,
please know:

I was thinking of you when I wrote it.
